Whats the issue?
This one from Appu had me rolling with laughter.
We were travelling from Oman border with cousins and we had to present our passports to the officials at the border. Appu took back the passport from my cousin and while flipping through it asks:
Appu – “A, did you have any problem in 2005?”
My cousin starts thinking deeply and replies: “No, why did you ask?”
Appu – “Then why is it written here date of issue 2005?”

A dangerous animal
Conversation yesterday between Appu and me while deciding on which animal to speak about at her show and tell on “Endangered Animals”. Appu’s choice was the Komodo Dragon whereas I suggested the more closer to heart White Tigers.
Appu – Hmmm… I think I could talk about you also!
Me – Wha!! I am not endangered!
Appu – Ya, but you are dangerous!
Me – Huh…so u are calling me an animal?
Appu – Know why, b’cos animals can harm me and you can also harm me!
My daughter sure has a high opinion about me!

More Appuisms!
Appu’s comments at the birthday party:
All the kids are lined up for the spoon and olive race with their olive laden spoons in their mouth. Appu quips to the attending lady, “Aunty, see I don’t have teeth in the middle. I have only gums. It pains when I keep the spoon in the center. Can I keep the spoon on the side?”
During the face painting, one of the SFC staff is addressed by her colleague as April.
Ever curious Appu: Aunty, she called you April. Your name is April?
The lady : Yes, because I was born in April.
Appu : Oh! Then my name should be October!

Money matters
While coaching Appu on the importance of taking care of her things and not wasting stuff, I tried the classic “money does not grow on trees” line. Have’nt we all grown up hearing this line? I vividly remember conjuring up images of trees with money leaves. And it did drive home the message that money does not come easy (though only for the moment).
But Appu had a totally different view of it. Calmly, with composure that belies her age and put me to shame she quipped “ Amma, I know money does not grow on trees. There is no tree called money tree. There is a plant called money plant but even on this plant money does not grow!”
Sigh...why do they have to get so practical!! But all I could do was to blurt out laughing and hug her!

Overnight to Singapore
Just another lazy evening at home. An eons old episode of Mr. Bean was being telecast for the 123456789th time on Pogo. Appu is totally drawn into it and beats Bean in enacting his gross/senseless/exaggerated antics.
B was glancing thro’ the newspapers. And humble me was with the laptop, lurking and delurking on blogs when I cam across an article on Singapore. Suggested casually to B that we should consider a trip soon. This got us talking about the places to visit, the best time to visit etc. Appu, mind u, was still engrossed in Mr. Bean’s world.
The question popped by the young madam today:- So, are we going to Singapore today?
Me (puzzled) – Huh, today? Who told u?
Appu – U and Acha were talking about it yesterday.
Me – We were only discussing. Were’nt you watching TV then?
Appu – Oh oh … I already told Ammoomma that we are going today!!
And she pushes off to mom shouting,” Ammoomma…we are not going today…..!!!”

Uff..those hows and whys
Appu’s abacus classes at BrainObrain starts today. The classes will be held twice a week for 2 hours.
The bus driver was on line with me while I was at work informing that he would be reaching below our building in 5 minutes. I was frantically trying to call home so that they would be able to get ready and come down before the bus arrives. Appu answers the phone.
Me: Appu, the bus will be coming down in 5 minutes. Please ask Ammoomma to take you down.
Appu : How do you know he will come in 5 minutes?
Me (hoping its not one of those sessions) : He told me.
Appu : How he told you?
Me : I called him on his mobile.
Appu : How "you" got his number?
Me : I got it from BrainObrain
Appu : How "they" got his number?
Me (Oh no, just what I feared!) : He is working with them. They asked him and got his number.
Appu : Okie, how "he" got his number?
Me (grinding my teeth) : What??
Appu – See, when he was a baby and a child , he did not have a number, right? So now from where did he get the number?
Me (rolling my eyes – tell me, can u expect such questions even at 61/2? I thought we were long past that) – Can you now just get ready and go down. The bus will be coming in a moment! (Thank Gawd!!)

Cute Appuness!
Last Wednesday Appu decided to sleep on our bed. Aarush was thrilled to have his favorite star on bed with him and expressed his extreme pleasure by pulling at Appu's hair, nose atc and cooing and giggling at her. Appu, being the doting big sis that she is, kept cooing back and tolerating the little guys torment of her face and hair. This went on for a long time and Appu's patience began to wane at around 11.30. Then a sleepy big sister comments thus to the little one "You can sleep all day tomorrow. But not me. Chechi (Big sis) has to get up at 5'O clock to go to school!" And off she marched to her bed!

We saw Santa
Appu had a nice time at the Kids' Christmas celebrations at Millenium Hotel. A group of children sang lovely Christmas carols. Santa gave gift hampers to the kids. Here is a photo of Appu at the event!

Appu, however, was not too conviced by Santa. Whiel returning form the event she asks:
Appu : Amma, do u think that was real Santa?
Me : Yes,that was real Santa.
Appu : No, he was speaking Arabic. Santa cant speak Arabic! And his moustache and beard was not real.
Me : Is that so? I didnt notice.
Appu : And Amma, I will tell you one more thing, Santa is not a real person. Big people tell stories to children about Santa bringing gifts so that they will be good children.
Well, I decided to keep my mouth shut about some gifts I had planned to leave under the Christmas tree with the same explanation. She is way ahead of me!

Our Trip on the Metro
The metro fever has been raging throughout Dubai and it seemed a though we were the only ones who had not yet taken a metro ride. So when Appu was assigned the topic of “My Trip on the Metro” for her Show and Tell this week, we decided to take the trip so that she would be able to give a better account of it on her own.
This Friday we boarded from Al Rashidiya Station and traveled till Mall of the Emirates and back. We got to experience the trip during the day and at night. We traveled in both the Gold and Silver class for experience sake though we had taken Gold tickets for both the trips. I should say the trains are class, the stations are state of the art. Parking is ample. But a lot of things are incomplete and those extra touches are missing. They don’t even have adequate seats at the station. But of course, it is too early to judge.
As far as our trip goes, it was tiring as Aarush chose this day to do a lot of super - throwing up and mom and me had to do a lot of cleaning up after him. By the end of the trip he was a little irritable probably from being carried the whole day.
Appu was thrilled at the beginning of the journey. It was the first train journey for her. We had a lovely trip earlier in India but she was too young then to remember.
Appu’s sincere comments:
“Wooooww..its like an aeroplane!”
After some time…“Will we have ‘food serving’?” (She said it so loudly, I am sure all might have heard and suppressed a laugh)
After some time.....” No food??…I am hungry! I had only one dosa for breakfast!”
After some time…“Ahhh..its so boring! Don’t they sell chips in the trains?”
After some time..(she wanted to pee and was wriggling and twisting herself in an attempt to hold on until we reached our destination..poor girl)
“When are we going to get down?”
When we reached the station…”Haaah…thank you lord!” ( I love the way she thanks god!)
And when we were to start the return journey later in the day after having lunch, a stroll in Mall of the Emirates and a little bit of window shopping…“Oh! Again? ”
And after the trip I asked her how what she would say for her Show and Tell about the trip. Pat came the reply:
“ Good Morning everybody! I went for a ride on the metro this Friday. It was sooo boring.!”
I guess that sums it all up!

A few cuties..
This happened the next day after Appu's birthday celebrations. We were cleaning up after the celebrations and my house resembled the aftermath of a mini tornado. B asked whether to keep the birthday candle (6) for memory sake. I was not for it as it might just add up to the clutter that I am trying so desperately to minimise. Appu immediately quips " No Amma, we will keep it...we can turn it and use it again for my ninth birthday!". And she turns the candle upside down to prove herself! Wah...how innovative! Looks like cost cutting si getting into her too....
Another incident...
There is a boy in Appu's class that she has a crush on undoubtedly. Lets call him AP. She cutely throws me a hint or two at times to express her feelings. Last night we were in the car returning from Dubai after shopping. Mom was also with us. She comes up with the following questions:
Appu : What's AP's moms name?
Me : Its D
Appu : What's AP's dad's name?
me : Its P
Appu : D is acha's girlfriend. P is amma's boyfriend. So AP is...?
What could I say???

What answer shall I give?
Telephone conversation between me and Appu when she returned from school after distributing chocolates for her birthday:
Appu: Amma, I gave chocolates to all the students in class. I gave to all the teachers also. The teachers shook my hand and wished me Happy Birthday. Some of them said God Bless You also.
Me : That's very nice.
Appu : I gave D (her best friend) 2 chocolcates. Others I gave only 1. N (another girl in class whom she is not very fond of for some reason) came to me and asked "Abhirami, can u please give me one more chocolate". You kow what I did. I closed the box.
Me : That's very rude. You should not have done that. You should have given her one more.
Appu : No way..she said she wants to give ehr younger sister.
Me : Thats very sweet of her. You should have given her another chocolate for her to take to her sister. She asked you for another one because she loves her sister so much.
Appu : Amma, if she loves her sister so much, why cant she give her the chocolate I gave her?
I was dumbstruck!

Sweet comparison..
Appu has lately been comparing Aarush to gulab jamun. The reasons being:
1) Gulab Jamun in round and so is Aarush
2) Gulab Jamun is brown and so is Aarush
3) Gulab Jamun is sweet and so is Aarush
While on this topic, I should mention a cute remark from Appu a few days after brought Aarush home. She was sitting on the day bed in our room and nibbling on some barfis. I requested her not to eatin the bedroom and not to drop the crumbs on the floor. Her remark " OK Amma, some ants might come and seeing baby they might think he is chocolate and eat him, right?". Ahem...is this what we call chocolaty brown!
