More Appuisms!

Appu’s comments at the birthday party:

All the kids are lined up for the spoon and olive race with their olive laden spoons in their mouth. Appu quips to the attending lady, “Aunty, see I don’t have teeth in the middle. I have only gums. It pains when I keep the spoon in the center. Can I keep the spoon on the side?”

During the face painting, one of the SFC staff is addressed by her colleague as April.

Ever curious Appu: Aunty, she called you April. Your name is April?
The lady : Yes, because I was born in April.
Appu : Oh! Then my name should be October!

Happy 7th Birthday!

My dearest Appu,

Its 3 days after your 7th birthday. Amma’s note for you is delayed by3 whole days, but I am sure you would understand that this is due to the mad rush that was amma’s life for the past few weeks.

Unlike the earlier years, my eyes well up with tears at the thought of my pretty princess entering a new phase of life…7th Birthday is considered as a new phase of development little girls. Like any other child, you were looking forward to turning 7 as you felt that it would mark a certain level of maturation for you. I loved the way that you insisted and corrected all until October 15th that you were only 6 and not 7. The novelty of turning 7 was exclusively and rightly reserved by you for October 16th 2010.

The last year has seen a lot of developments in you.

a) You have established your role as a loving caring big sister and are absolutely adored by your little brother. The two of you have even started playing games such as hide and seek regularly.
b) You have become much more confident and respond to people well. Your teacher also has commented that you have become much more interactive in class and now have a bigger circle of friends.
c) You have improved vastly in your studies. You are now showing a keen interest in your school work.
d) You have become much ore expressive, though at times very difficult and rebellious too and can back answer like there is no tomorrow!! You have even received quite a number of well deserved spankings from me for this.
e) Your dance and swimming classes are going well and you have improved drastically in both.
f) You have started abacus classes and this too you seem to have grasped very well.
g) You have started cycling around without support wheels and you have received a brand new cycle from your grand aunt as birthday gift.
h) Your reading skills have improved and you have started developing an affinity for books giving me hopes that all my efforts are bearing fruit finally.

Now onto the party details.

The preparation for the birthday this time was definitely not well planned and cooked up at the last minute as I was extremely busy at work and generally in very low spirits because of never ending fire fighting and unexpected hurdles at work place. But I am glad that Appu thoroughly enjoyed the party at SFC. It was a typical kids’ party at any other fast food outlets and almost 17 kids from the building, school, friends etc and 21 adults. The theme of the cake was “ Garden Fairy” in vanilla chocolate flavour, from Mr. Baker again . It looked much better than it tasted this time tough. Next birthday, I will definitely be looking out for better options.

I was a touched when Appu said that the best thing she liked about the party was that she cut the cake with Aarush and that she shared the knick knacks on her cake with her friends. I was also touched when she said that what she did not like was that only I put the cake in her mouth. Mom and Biju were caught up in the frenzy of cake cutting, managing the kids etc.

Appu was dressed in a pretty off white full length frock with gold leaves and loads of ribbons. She insisted on having her hair done in curls. At the beauty parlour, she put across her requirements so clearly much to the surprise of the beautician (Very unlike me who had no idea how to get my hair done and settled for a simple blow dry). I was not too happy with the result and would have liked her hair left untouched as straight and silky as it was naturally. But then, this was her day!

All in all, everything went ahead pretty well. Aarsuh was at his best getting along with one and all and generally being easy! I love him for this!

My dearest Appu, hope you have a great year ahead and may god bless you with all that you deserve!!

Fun to be One!

It took me a whole week to put up a post on Aarush’s b’day celebrations. The mundane things in life had taken over my time!

I celebrated the day with a much needed day off from work and spend the whole day as a full time mom of Appu and Aarush. We did not have much by way of celebrations as Aarush is too small to understand birthdays now. Appu and her mom, aka me, were the ones who made the most of the day. We stuffed ourselves with piping hot just –out- of- the- kadai puris made by mom. Lunch was a kerala sadhya, a mini version though, with parippu, pappadam, red rice, ghee, payasam etc.

We had only our closest relatives and friends over in the evening for cake cutting and dinner. Aarush was looking adorable in his sherwani and Appu was a true princess in her new frock that we picked up from Avenue. The cake, sadly, had an unfortunate fall while being collected from Mr. Baker and suffered a broken hip! The candle was blown by Appu, the cake was cut by Appu and distributed by Appu in true “big sis” style. You better not expect this privilege next year as the little monster is not going to let you get away with it!

For Appu, birthdays bring with a lot of thrill be it hers or anyone else’s in the family. One can see her all excited for the full week leading up to big day. And her brother’s birthday was her special day as well. She had scribbled a lovely birthday message for Aarush on her white board which read “My dearest baby brother, I cannot imagine that you are one year old today. You are so cute. Love you very much. Abhirami” This was without any help or suggestion from any of us at home.

May this love and bonding remain as strong as ever between the two!

See for yourself, have I not grown?

This tiny bundle we brought home last year is now a self propelled high powered engine.

Happy Birthday Aarush!

My dearest baby…Congrats on completing one year. What a fun filled and eventful year it has been for us, isn’t it?Ever since your arrival, we have had so much more fun together and bonded more as a family.  Tiny little one, you have spread so much happiness in our lives!

With your sister, I have always felt that I have been inadequate since I failed to capture and enjoy a lot of exciting developments and she grew up too fast for me to catch up with her. I've tried not to make that same mistake with you. I made sure that right from day one I would cherish and treasure each moment with you. Though there were some not so good and some extremely bad days, looking back I can truthfully say that I never felt saddled by it all.  And now I am so thrilled to see you transform from the tiny helpless tadpole that you were to a lion cub prowling around on all fours, to a miniature he-man on tiny twos, always an energetic and babbling and drooling bundle!

The coming year is going to be as eventful and busy one for you and we look forward to seeing you dish out loads of exciting surprises for us, reaching numerous milestones, filling our house with mischief and laughter and enjoying each moment of our life with you.

My precious little one, as you go ahead on this beautiful adventure of life, may you be blessed with abundance of love, encouragement and support from your family and friends. May you have the faith in yourself to stand by your beliefs and convictions in face of oppositions. May you have the courage to face the obstacles head on while proceeding on the path of truth. May you have the confidence to get up after each fall and move on steadfastedly. May you have the strength in you to forgive and to be fair. May god bestow upon you good health and wisdom and may he be the guiding light for you along your path of life.

Happy Birthday my dearest little son!

The monkeying we did!

A cancelled meeting in the Dubai office gave me a long awaited chance to hang around with Appu.  Went to Festival City.  Our usual visits to FC end with a trip to Ikea or Hyperpanda.  But today was different.  The long pending trip to Build a Bear Workshop materialised.  And we walked out with the latest addition to our family - a huggable and endearing chimp named Bubbles (named after MJ's chimp, remember him?) that was totally Appu's creation.

Bubbles, who was "all skin and no bones" was plumped up enough to make him worthy of a tight hug.  Bubbles was then given a bright red heart after filling it up with warmth, love and energy.  He was taught to sing "Happy Birthday".  And since the football mania is still around, he was smartly dressed up in a football jersey, kneepad and all.

To make the experience more exciting, Bubbles was given and "official" birthcertificate recording his dob, name, height, weight etc.

All this was done by a very loving sister to gift her younger brother the most special gift for his first birthday!

Birthday celebrations

Appu’s birthday was celebrated dhoom dhaam se last Thursday, a day before her actual birthday.

The celebrations were underway from 13/10/2009 in a sense. Both me and B stayed up late until 2.00 am and decorated the hall and the corridor of our house. Appu was in for a pleasant surprise when she woke up the next morning and saw our home decked up. For her the thrill of the birthday celebrations had commenced.

I barely managed to keep myself awake in office the next day. I was totally tired and could not keep my eyes open after 9.00 pm the next. So B single handedly had to blow all the balloons and stick them on the walls. He had done such a wonderful job of it that I was surprised when I woke up at 1.00 am for Aarush’s feed. Appu was again in for a surprise the next day when she saw the balloons. It was as though the excitement was being given to her in small doses. Aarush loved the balloons too and was cooing the whole day looking at the balloons. Even his excitement was very evident. Since Appu’s school does not encourage much of celebrations in school for birthdays, it was limited to distribution of chocolates for the students and teachers.

Even was a rush. The party was scheduled to start at 6.00 pm and I managed to leave office at 5. Had to rush to collect the cake, get the food etc etc. We were finally home at 6.30 just when the kids were coming in. Then there was a melee at home. The cake was admired by all. Must say it was much more beautiful and tastier than I expected. Though nothing was planned earlier, I managed to throw in a few games and a few dancing sessions to entertain the kids. Though there was so much of a hungama at home it was sure fun. By the end of the party, my hall was an utter mess. The adults we had invited came in by 8.30 and we had a sumptuous dinner. The menu – aromatic boneless chicken biryani, parathas, chapathis, butter chicken, salad, raitha, and the jewel in the crown….mom’s very special beef fry….which was unbelievably tasty.

We hit bed at 2.00 am after the celebrations and after the last of the guests had left. Still, Appu was up at 7.00 am asking whether she could open the gifts. Wonder when she will pass over this craze for gifts! More than the actual gifts, I have realized that it is the excitement of opening the gifts and the surprise of seeing the gifts that interests her.

Posting a few photos of the celebrations….

6th Birthday

Appu turns 6 this 16th and she has been super excited about it. This year she has agreed to forego a party at any of the fast food outlets and has agreed to a small key affair at home. Since Thursday would be more convenient for all, we have decided to keep the party on 15th. We have invited a few of the girls from our building and a couple of her classmates. The cake has been ordered. She had initially suggested a Barbie cake, Power Puff Girls or Dora cake. But while at Mr. Baker, she opted for a Disney Barbecue cake. After the kids party, we will be having a few of our relatives and close friends over for dinner

Though in a few more days she will be 6, she refuses to call herself a 6 yr old and vehemently argues with me when I say that she is 6. Looks like she is concerned about ageing now itself!
